Volatile Solids & Fixed Solids Calculator
Definition: Volatile Solids (VS) represent the portion of dried solids lost during ignition, while Fixed Solids (FS) represent the residue remaining after ignition.
VS (mg/L) = [(A − B) × 1000] / V
FS (mg/L) = [(B − C) × 1000] / V
FS (mg/L) = [(B − C) × 1000] / V
Where A is the weight of dish + dried residue, B is the weight of dish + ignited residue, C is the empty dish weight, and V is the sample volume in mL.
Method basis: Gravimetric determination of fixed and volatile solids using loss on ignition, consistent with standard water and wastewater laboratory procedures.
