What Is Hydrostatic Pressure?

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure exerted by a fluid at rest due to the weight of the fluid above a given point. It increases with fluid density and depth.

For example, water exerts greater hydrostatic pressure at greater depths because more water is above the point being considered. Hydrostatic pressure is commonly used in fluid mechanics, tanks, pipelines, dams, swimming pools and other liquid systems.

Hydrostatic Pressure Formula

The hydrostatic pressure formula is P = ρgh, where P is hydrostatic pressure, ρ is fluid density, g is gravitational acceleration and h is fluid depth.

Using standard gravitational acceleration of 9.80665 m/s², the calculator determines pressure from the entered fluid density and depth.

How to Calculate Hydrostatic Pressure

Enter the fluid density and fluid depth into the calculator. The calculator converts the values to compatible SI units and calculates the resulting hydrostatic pressure.

For water with a density of approximately 1000 kg/m³, hydrostatic pressure increases by about 9.81 kPa for every metre of depth, excluding atmospheric pressure.

Hydrostatic Pressure Calculator FAQs

What is hydrostatic pressure?

Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure exerted by a fluid at rest because of the weight of the fluid above a particular point. The pressure increases with depth and fluid density.

What is the hydrostatic pressure formula?

The formula is P = ρgh, where P is pressure, ρ is fluid density, g is gravitational acceleration and h is fluid depth.

Does hydrostatic pressure depend on depth?

Yes. For a fluid with constant density, hydrostatic pressure increases linearly with depth.

Does hydrostatic pressure depend on fluid density?

Yes. At the same depth, a fluid with greater density produces greater hydrostatic pressure.

What is the hydrostatic pressure of water at 1 metre depth?

Using a water density of 1000 kg/m³ and gravitational acceleration of 9.80665 m/s², the hydrostatic pressure at 1 metre depth is approximately 9.81 kPa, excluding atmospheric pressure.

Does this calculator include atmospheric pressure?

No. The calculator uses P = ρgh to calculate hydrostatic pressure due to the fluid column. Atmospheric pressure is not included.

What units does this calculator provide?

The calculator provides hydrostatic pressure in Pa, kPa, bar and psi.
