Distance Calculator
How Is Distance Between Locations Calculated?
This calculator uses the geographic coordinates of each location to calculate the shortest distance between them over the Earth’s surface. The result is provided in kilometres and miles.
The calculation uses the Haversine formula, which determines the distance between two points using their latitude and longitude while accounting for the Earth’s curvature.
Distance Between Multiple Locations
The calculator can calculate a route with intermediate locations. Each consecutive pair of locations is calculated separately, and the individual distances are added to determine the total geographic distance.
For example, a route from Mumbai → Delhi → Goa → London is calculated as three separate segments: Mumbai to Delhi, Delhi to Goa and Goa to London.
What Does the Distance Calculator Show?
The calculator provides the total geographic distance and details for each segment of a multi-location route.
- Total distance in kilometres
- Total distance in miles
- Distance between each consecutive location
- Bearing and compass direction
- Geographic midpoint of each segment
- Coordinates used for the calculation
Geographic Distance vs Driving Distance
Geographic distance is the shortest distance between two coordinates over the Earth’s surface. Driving distance follows the available road network and therefore depends on the roads, turns, highways and other route conditions.
For this reason, driving distance is generally different from the straight-line geographic distance calculated by this tool.
