Note: The gravel figure represents the approximate trench volume minus the volume occupied by the drain pipe. Actual gravel requirements may vary depending on trench design, pipe placement and aggregate size. Add extra material for waste and settling.

How to Calculate French Drain Gravel

To estimate the gravel needed for a French drain, first calculate the volume of the trench. Multiply the trench length by its width and depth.

Trench Volume = Length × Width × Depth

The drain pipe occupies part of this space, so the approximate gravel volume can be estimated by subtracting the volume of the pipe from the total trench volume.

Gravel Volume ≈ Trench Volume − Pipe Volume

The calculator uses these measurements to provide an estimate of the trench volume and gravel required for the drain.

French Drain Volume Formula

The basic formula for the volume of a rectangular French drain trench is:

Volume = Length × Width × Depth

Make sure all three measurements use the same unit before calculating. The result represents the total volume of the excavated trench before accounting for the space occupied by the pipe.

How Much Gravel Does a French Drain Need?

The amount of gravel depends on the dimensions of the trench and the size and placement of the drain pipe. A wider, deeper or longer trench requires more aggregate.

For example, a trench measuring 50 feet long, 1 foot wide and 2 feet deep has a volume of:

50 × 1 × 2 = 100 ft³

This is the total trench volume. The actual gravel volume will be slightly lower because the drain pipe occupies some of the trench. Additional material may also be needed to account for waste, settling and the particular installation design.

French Drain Materials

A typical French drain installation consists of a perforated drainage pipe surrounded by drainage aggregate. Landscape fabric may also be used around the trench or aggregate to help separate the drainage material from surrounding soil.

The exact construction can vary depending on site conditions, drainage requirements and the design of the system.

French Drain Calculator FAQs

How do you calculate French drain gravel?

Calculate the trench volume by multiplying length × width × depth. Then subtract the approximate volume occupied by the drain pipe to estimate the gravel volume.

How much gravel do I need for a French drain?

The amount depends on the length, width and depth of the trench and the diameter of the pipe. Use the calculator above to estimate the required gravel volume.

What is the French drain trench volume formula?

The basic formula is Length × Width × Depth. This gives the total volume of the rectangular trench.

Does the calculator include the drain pipe?

Yes. The calculator estimates the pipe's volume and subtracts it from the total trench volume when estimating the gravel requirement.

Should I buy extra gravel?

Yes. The calculated quantity is an estimate. Actual requirements can vary because of waste, settling, trench shape and installation conditions, so additional material may be appropriate.
